Biography
Judith learned to make bobbin lace in England in the 1970’s. Shortly after returning to Australia she began teaching lacemaking by invitation of the Embroiderers Guild of Victoria.
Judith then taught privately and for the Victorian Branch of the Australian Lace Guild. She was heavily involved with the ALG, holding executive positions at State level, followed by a term as National President. During her term as National President Judith and her fellow committee members were instrumental in formalising the original requirements and curricula for Proficiency Assessment in the various forms of lace making.
Judith taught Torchon lace, Bucks Point and Honiton, developing her own patterns and teaching material for each lace.(Some examples of her lace can be seen in the Gallery.) In 1985/6 Judith wrote a correspondence course for Honiton lace. A formal trial of the course, with ten participants, was conducted between 1987/88 and this material will form the basis of the LRI Distance Learning Course for people interested in Honiton Lace.
Judith stopped making and teaching lace in 1988 and did not return to the craft until the year 2000, in between she attained a Degree in Fine Arts at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
Judith currently lives with her husband (who is once more suffering the trials and tribulations of being a ‘lace husband’) and two dogs.
