Level coding for lace patterns

 

Pattern Levels for all lace patterns are based on the lacemaker being able to work without instruction

Each new level assumed that the most of skills in all previous levels have been attained.


Pattern Codes

Level 1   Level 2   Level 3   Level 4   Level 5   Level 6   Level 7   Level 8

Level 1 Patterns
(Near beginners)
 

  • Set in using temporary pins at the top of a pricking
  • Work torchon ground (half stitch, pin, half stitch)
  • Work woven fans with a torchon stitch edge (a.k.a. double half stitch, cloth and twist, firm edge).
  • Work woven blocks in either half stitch or cloth stitch
  • Work a torchon footside edge (a mounting edge)
  • Work edgings with corners
  • Move lace up a pricking
  • Join lace end to end by taking sewings.

Level 2 patterns
(Near beginners who have all level 1 plus the following skills.)

  • Simple spiders (worked with either four pairs or six pairs)
  • Rose ground
  • Brabant ( or Honeycomb) ground
  • Use gimp to outline simple pattern elements
  • Work cloth stitch fans with a torchon stitch edge

Level 3 patterns

  • Accurately estimate thread requirements for patterns
  • Use gimp threads to outline and separate grouped woven blocks
  • Work square mats
  • Work patterns with insertion edges
  • Work woven lozenge and chevron shapes
  • Work terminating trails with a crow's foot directional change or by using the same pin twice.

Level 4 patterns

  • Work crossing trails in cloth stitch and half stitch
  • Work dropped line directional changes for cloth stitch trails
  • Work twisted central divisions within cloth stitch pattern elements
  • Work torchon stitch (double half stitch) central divisions in cloth stitch woven pattern elements.
  • Work other single pin grounds such as Dieppe, pin stitch/pinhole, double, torchon with 2 twists etc.

Level 5 patterns

  • Work compound spider ground
  • Use gimp to create patterns
  • Set in and finish at a point (for bookmarks and similar) so both ends look the same
  • Set in and work four sided insertion edges (narrow)
  • Work simple edgings plotted on circular grids
  • Work ribbed fans such as crown, little crown or fishtail.
  • Work cuffs or other rectangular pieces in three sections

Level 6 patterns

  • Understand thread movements within patterns
  • Work complex edgings plotted on circular grids
  • Work straight lengths with a footside edge suitable for gathering
  • Work whole stitch ground
  • Work point d'esprit (square tallies) straight on in place of a ground stitch

Level 7 patterns

  • Set in and work four sided insertion edges, both narrow and wide
  • Work rectangular mats in four sections with central sewings
  • Work square ground/s
  • Work haloed spiders
  • Work two pin rose ground
  • Work large pea (spider with open centre)
  • Work point d'esprit (square tallies) angled in place of a ground stitch
  • Work shaped point d'esprit to create flower shapes in torchon or rose ground

Level 8 patterns

  • Work cuffs or other rectangular pieces in three sections (without instruction or diagrams)
  • Set in and work two piece collars without instruction so that the finish reflects the setting in
  • Set in and work single piece round, shawl or square collars and/or yokes
