Technical Module No.1 Estimating thread requirements for torchon patterns
Printer and printer paper for printing out the Checklists and Tables that simplify the processes, and the accompanying notes and Exercise; printing these is optional but most people work better with printed information than reading it on screen.
Lace pillow, pins, cover cloths and pricking card suitable for making Torchon Lace.
Patterns are provided for two grid sizes, 2mm (1/12") and 2.5mm (1/10). Most people have a preferred grid/pattern size for making their lace, so select whichever of these two sizes you prefer. If you normally work over a larger grid than the patterns provided, then you should plot the patterns onto that size of grid because the calculations are relevant only to a specific grid size and threads that are suited to that grid.
Thread must be appropriate for the grid size so use the thread you would usually choose for working patterns of your preferred grid size.
Coloured thread is required for one pair of bobbins per sample, and for marker threads. This may be a different type or size of thread to that used for making the lace.
A Calculator is of benefit for making accurate calculations required in this set of exercises, but not essential. Every PC with a Windows Operating System has one and instructions for finding the inbuilt calculator are included in the course material. If you do not have an inbuilt calculator in your Program Files, the math is simple multiplication and division and most people will be able to manage without one.
